Walk into some clinics and you will get a treatment recommendation within two minutes of sitting down. At JuvyDerm in NE Calgary, we do it differently: before we suggest anything, we look at your skin properly. Alma IQ is the tool that lets us do that. It is an AI-powered skin analysis system that captures high-resolution images of your face and maps what is happening on the surface and in the layers beneath.

The scan takes only a few minutes, involves no needles, no downtime, and no discomfort. It is a $165 optional add-on (not included in the free consultation). Here is what it actually measures, why it changes the recommendations you get, and what to expect when you sit in front of it.

How the scan works

Alma IQ photographs your skin under multiple lighting conditions, including standard, cross-polarized, and UV-style imaging. Each lighting mode reveals different information: some show surface texture and visible redness, while others expose pigment sitting deeper in the skin that has not surfaced yet.

The AI then analyzes those images and compares your skin across multiple categories. Instead of a general impression, we get an objective, repeatable snapshot. That repeatability matters, because when you come back after a treatment series we can rescan and compare like for like, rather than relying on memory or bathroom-mirror judgment calls.

What Alma IQ actually maps

The analysis breaks your skin down into specific, measurable concerns. Seeing them laid out side by side is often an eye-opener, especially the difference between the pigment you can see today and the sun damage developing underneath.

Why we start every plan with data, not guesses

Two people can walk in asking for the same treatment for what looks like the same concern, and need completely different plans. The scan helps us tell these apart before anything touches your skin.

This is where our clinical team comes in. The AI provides the map, but Juvy Terbio, our aesthetic specialist with more than 15 years of experience, interprets it alongside your history, your goals, and your budget, with medical oversight from Dr. Vanessa Terbio-Fernandez, a board-certified dermatologist. Sometimes the scan confirms what a client suspected. Quite often it redirects the plan entirely, for example toward treating underlying sun damage in Calgary's intense high-altitude UV before chasing a surface concern.

What it means for your treatment plan

Because JuvyDerm carries a full Alma Lasers lineup, the scan is not a sales funnel toward one machine. Depending on what your analysis shows, a plan might involve skin rejuvenation with the Alma Hybrid or Harmony XL Pro, a pigment program, medical chemical peels, microneedling, medical facials, or simply better home care and sunscreen first. Many clients are relieved to hear they need less than they expected.

The scan also sets honest expectations. If your analysis shows deep pigment or established scarring, we will tell you plainly that improvement usually takes a series of treatments over months, not a single magic session. Results vary from person to person, and we would rather you know that on day one.

What to expect at your scan

Come with clean skin if you can, though we can work around makeup. You will sit in front of the imaging system for a few minutes while it captures your photos, then we review the results together on screen. You can ask anything, and there is no pressure to book treatment on the spot.

There is no downtime and nothing to recover from, so you can go straight back to your day. Many clients tell us the scan alone was worth the visit, simply because it was the first time anyone showed them what was actually going on with their skin.
